The family of Foulis, a branch of the Clan Munro from Ross-Shire Scotland, were involved with books from the mid 1700s. Andrew and Robert Foulis became printers to the University of Glasgow in 1743 and were well known for their craftsmanship and enterprise in printing and publishing fine editions. Since then the Foulis family has also been involved in publishing, bookselling and bookbinding in Scotland.

Hunter & Foulis traces its own roots in Edinburgh back to 1857, and probably before that when William Hunter started his bookbinding business in Strichen’s Close, off the High Street and very close to the Law Courts, printers, booksellers and the avid Edinburgh readers of the day. In 1935, seventy or so years later, William Hunter & Son had moved to the site at Bridgeside Works, Edinburgh where they resided for the next 66 years.

2001 saw a move to a state of the art facility in Haddington just outside Edinburgh.

In 2002 Hunter & Foulis Ltd were acquired by the Montgomery Litho Group and look to the future with their unique enthusiasm, skills and expertise.
